Crews respond to forest fire in Neebing

Fire near Highway 593 draws response from fire crews, helicopters.

Fire crews are responding to a forest fire just off of Highway 593 in Neebing, about 50 kilometres southwest of Thunder Bay.

Three fire ranger crews were responding to the fire along with heavy equipment on Saturday, said information officer Jonathan Scott with Ontario’s Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFFES).

Helicopters also helped fight the fire, dubbed Thunder Bay 65, on Friday when it was discovered by AFFES.

Considered not under control and burning at 8.9 hectares, the fire is located about 1.5 kilometres north of Highway 593, about four kilometres west of the Devon Road Mesa provincial nature reserve.

The Thunder Bay District is under a restricted fire zone imposed by the Ministry of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry Friday, with fire hazard high to extreme across much of the Northwest.

Another fire in the district, Thunder Bay 64, was discovered by AFFES Friday near the lakeshore on Fort William First Nation. The 0.1 hectare fire has been called out.
