Thunder Bay breaks heat record for second straight day

Another temperature record dating back to the 1950s was shattered Tuesday. THUNDER BAY — October’s mini-heatwave continued in Thunder Bay for the second straight day Tuesday. At the airport, Environment Canada recorded a temperature of 28 C at 3 p.m.

According to Environment Canada data, that easily broke the previous Oct. 3 mark of 25.6 C, established in 1956.

On Monday, the high temperature at the airport was 29.8 C, shattering the old Oct. 2 mark of 27.2 C set in 1953, and establishing a new all-time high for the month of October.

An Environment Canada spokesperson told TBnewswatch the previous maximum temperature for the month was 28.3, reached in 1943.

The unusually warm start to October followed a very mild September, when the average temperature (through all hours of the day) in Thunder Bay was 14.8 C, almost a full three degrees higher than the normal average for September.

That was the largest difference from normal among all cities in Ontario for which Environment Canada released data in a report issued Tuesday.

But starting Friday, Thunder Bay’s daily highs will reach only 11 C, or about two degrees below normal for this time of year.
