War in Ukraine: how could this end? | The Economist

As Russia continues the bombardment of Ukraine, peace talks falter and threats of escalation increase, our Economist experts discuss how the war could end.

A month into the war, much of the world’s attention is focused on Mariupol, a southern port besieged by Russian forces. Russia’s atrocities there have not brought it closer to victory; and its troops remain at bay outside the capital, Kyiv.

Ukraine’s foreign minister, Dmytro Kuleba, told The Economist this week his country needs more support—and that the European Union “is backsliding”. The EU has been struggling to preserve the united front Russian aggression has enabled it to show.

America is adding more sanctions to the severe measures already imposed on Russia. Many Western firms have pulled out of the country.

The Economist is following the conflict closely. Our coverage below describes what’s at stake and what might happen next.
